Welcome to the Temple Bariatric Surgery Program

Diabetes and high blood pressure. Depression and joint pain. They’re just some of the health problems that come with being excessively overweight. The good news? Bariatric (weight loss) surgery can be the key to helping you get rid of many obesity-related health problems.

Temple University Hospital is proud to be designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. This designation recognizes programs with a demonstrated track record of success and is a requirement for patients with Medicare coverage.

We are also designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery by Independence Blue Cross. This designation recognizes the high-quality care and excellent results achieved at Temple.

The doctors at the Temple Bariatric Program know that losing weight can be one of the most difficult challenges you can face. Because for many, being overweight is not always due to a lack of will power or exercise. Sometimes your family history may be to blame. For some people, no amount of dieting or exercising will help. It’s why we offer proven weight loss procedures such as adjustable gastric band and gastric bypass surgery. And because most of our procedures are done laparoscopically, you can expect a faster recovery and a lower risk of complications.

We know that weight loss surgery is a life-changing event and the Temple weight-loss team works with you every step of the way. Our surgeons, nurses, dietitians and psychologists are some of the most experienced in the region.

Is Weight Loss Surgery an Option for You?

This type of surgery may be an option if at least one of the following conditions applies to you:

  • Your body mass index (BMI) is over 40. Calculate your BMI.
  • You have a BMI of 35 or more plus medical problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, arthritis or heart disease
  • You have obesity-related problems that interfere with work, family life or basic walking
  • You are unable to lose weight or maintain weight loss through traditional methods such as diet and exercise

What are the Benefits of Weight Loss Surgery?

  • Depending on the procedure, from 40 to 75 percent of excess body weight is usually lost over the next two to three years
  • Most obesity-related conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure often improve
  • Many patients maintain long-term weight loss if they are able to make the necessary lifestyle changes and are committed to following their nutrition plan and activity routine

If you are considering bariatric surgery, we will help you understand the nature of obesity and provide information about surgical weight loss options.

If you have already had bariatric surgery, we will provide nutritional information and support to help you meet and maintain your weight loss goals.
