The Temple Bariatric Surgery Program
The Temple bariatric surgery staff is one of the most experienced in the region. Our surgeons have performed more than 1,400 bariatric procedures with excellent results. Our program emphasizes proper patient selection, excellence in surgery and devotion to post-operative care.
We offer all forms of weight loss surgery, including open and laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB), commonly known as Lap-Band® and revisional surgical procedures.
For the comfort and safety of its patients, Temple University Hospital has a dedicated bariatric surgical unit, with rooms and equipment designed for the special needs of its patients.
Our team consists of surgeons, nurse practitioners, surgical assistants, registered dietitians, psychologists, exercise physiologists/certified personal trainers, nurses, case managers, and home caregivers. All of Temple’s bariatric surgeons are board certified and are members of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Temple’s team thoroughly evaluates all patients and educates them about the different surgical options and the risks associated with each procedure. Surgery is performed only when the team is satisfied that the patient fully understands the life-changing nature of these procedures. Bariatric surgery patients have the best outcomes when they are followed regularly after surgery.
The Temple bariatric team is committed to long-term care and schedules regular follow-up appointments with each patient. If a problem develops after surgery, the team moves quickly to minimize any risks to the patient. All Temple bariatric patients are encouraged to attend the program’s monthly support group meeting. Exercise classes are also available as well as psychologists for individual post-operative counseling.
Temple University Hospital was named a Bariatric Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). This designation – a requirement for Medicare coverage – recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes. To earn the Center of Excellence designation, a hospital must perform at least 125 bariatric surgeries per year. Hospitals must also report long-term patient outcomes, have an on-site inspection to verify all data, and maintain a dedicated, multi-disciplinary bariatric team that includes surgeons, nurses, medical consultants, nutritionists, psychologists and exercise physiologists.
The ASMBS Center of Excellence designation reflects the strong volume and outcomes we have achieved over the last several years. We look forward to being able to serve even more patients with our new Center of Excellence designation and Medicare-approved status.
Independence Blue Cross has named Temple University Hospital a “Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery.” This designation — which followed a rigorous evaluation of the bariatric program and patient outcomes — recognizes the high-quality care and excellent results achieved at Temple.
