Benefits of Surgery

What are the Benefits of Weight Loss Surgery?

Melissa - Temple Bariatric Patient

Combined with commitment to exercise and permanent changes in eating habits, bariatric surgery can provide important benefits including:

  • Significant and permanent weight loss
  • Enhanced quality of life
  • Better overall health and increased life span due to a reduction in health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and sleep apnea

Impact of Weight Loss on Health Problems

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
Arthritis pain in weight-bearing joints
Sleep apnea
Female hormone irregularities
Incontinence due to urinary stress

Weight loss often makes it dramatically easier to control blood sugar levels. Many patients are able to cut their diabetes medication levels by half or altogether within the first few months after surgery. Insulin dependent patients will most likely have to continue with some program of medication.

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure):

Hypertension usually improves with balanced weight loss. When combined with a program of healthy diet and exercise, bariatric surgery leads to a reduced or eliminated need for blood pressure medication in more than 50 percent of patients.

Arthritis pain in weight-bearing joints:

Arthritis pain is intensified by excessive weight, which puts added stress on weight-bearing joints like the knees or ankles. Healthy weight loss reduces the pressure imposed on weight-bearing joints and helps alleviate the pain associated with arthritis.

Sleep apnea:

The neck, throat and upper body are usually the first areas to show improvement during healthy weight loss. The airways open up and breathing improves. If you use a CPAP machine for your sleep apnea, you will need to continue with it initially. However, many patients experience reduced or eliminated need for the CPAP machine within the first months after surgery.

Gastric bypass surgery greatly reduces the amount of stomach acid that can reach the esophagus. This reduces and often eliminates occurrences of heartburn. The stomach pouch created during the surgery generates a small amount of acid, but usually not enough to produce heartburn.

Female hormone imbalance:

Excess weight can create irregularities in the menstrual cycle, and some women stop menstruating entirely. Healthy weight loss can balance the hormones, resulting in a resumed or more regular menstrual cycle.

If you are taking medication for depression, do not abruptly stop taking it. Review this medication with your surgical team while you are in the hospital.

Incontinence due to urinary stress:

Weight loss reduces the stress on the urinary tract, so incontinence often improves or stops entirely. This benefit can take longer for some patients than for others, but most see improvement with the first few months after surgery.
