Qualifications for Surgery

Most patients will qualify for bariatric surgery if they are at least 100 pounds over their ideal body weight or if their BMI is 35 or more. Check a patient's BMI now.

Patient criteria for bariatric surgery:

  • BMI between 35 and 40, with significant medical such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea or arthritis of weight-bearing joints
  • BMI of 40 or more, co-morbidities need not be present in order to have surgery
  • Between the ages of 18 to 70; patients over 70 will be considered on an individual basis
  • A commitment from the patient to long-term compliance with diet and exercise
