Gastric Banding Diet

Diet after Gastric Banding Surgery

To help ensure proper healing after a gastric banding procedure, it is important to maintain adequate nutrition and follow the dietary guidelines provided by the Temple dietitian. To help give the new stomach pouch – created by the gastric band – sufficient time to heal, you will begin with an all-liquid diet immediately following surgery, and you must be sure to sip fluids slowly and avoid growing too full. After the pouch has healed, limiting portion sizes will be just as important to maintain your weight loss. Gastric banding patients typically follow these diet phases after surgery:

  1. Liquids Only: For the first two weeks after surgery, you will be restricted to an all–liquid diet. For the first one or two days, you will sip only clear liquids – these include sugar-free gelatin, artificially sweetened non-carbonated beverages, diluted apple juice, and chicken or beef broth. Once you are able to tolerate clear liquids, you will progress to full liquids. These include yogurt and sugar-free pudding, milk and protein shakes, and low-fat creamed soups. Carbonated beverages should be avoided, as they may cause pain, gas and bloating. Most patients also require two high-protein supplements each day. The Temple dietitian will determine what supplements you need and give you tips for ensuring that you obtain adequate nutrients from your diet.

  2. Pureed Foods: By the third week after surgery, you will transition to pureed protein foods. Within a few days, you will move on to soft food. Your meals will be small, and you should concentrate on eating high-protein foods.

  3. Textured, Non-Pureed Foods: By the fifth or sixth week after surgery, you will begin eating foods with texture that require chewing. It is very important that you chew your food thoroughly and avoid eating tough meats, breads and fibrous vegetables. Be sure to include vegetables, fruits, heart-healthy fats, healthy carbohydrates, and low-fat proteins.

To maintain your weight loss after bariatric surgery, you will need to make a lifelong commitment to changes in your lifestyle that include following dietary guidelines and a regimen of vitamin and mineral supplements. The Temple weight-loss team will be there every step of the way to assist you before and after surgery, and to provide you with ongoing support.
